Texas Tech basketball: The all-time Dallas/Fort Worth Red Raider team
Point guard: Keenan Evans
The best point guard in Texas Tech basketball history is Richardson’s Keenan Evans. Over the course of his career, he averaged 12 points and 2.6 assists per game.
Of course, he was the leading scorer on the first-ever Elite Eight Red Raider team when he averaged 17.6 points and 3.2 assists as a senior in 2017-18. That year, he also earned second-team All-American recognition.
He is one of only four players in program history to amass at least 1,500 points, 350 rebounds, 325 assists, and 125 steals during his career. What’s more, he sits at No. 13 in scoring for Tech with 1,571 points.
The 6-foot-3 guard was a true case of steady improvement over time. In an era dominated by one-and-done players around the nation, he had to refine his craft to become the player that he would eventually prove to be.
As a true freshman, he averaged only 5.8 points per game while playing under 19 minutes per outing. And as a sophomore, he still didn’t crack the 10-p.p.g. barrier as he scored 8.7 per game.
But he took off in his junior year, which coincided with the arrival of head coach Chris Beard. That year, he put up 15.4 points and three assists per game.
Evans was everything you would expect of a Texas Tech basketball player. Gritty, tough, humble, hard-working, he personified the blue-collar persona of the program and he would be the perfect point guard for the DWF Red Raider team.
