Houston Baptist – Win

It’s hard to envision Tech failing to beat Houston Baptist tonight at Jones Stadium.  There is simply too much of a disparity between where the two programs are to envision an upset taking place.

HBU has only been playing football for 7 years.  What’s more, They have never faced a Power 5 program.

The Huskies did take on another FBS program last week but were outclassed by North Texas, 57-31.  That doesn’t bode well for their chances this week.

What also makes Tech an overwhelming favorite in this contest is the fact that the Red Raiders have been fantastic against teams from the lower level of the sport.  All-time Tech is 23-1 against teams from the FCS (formerly known as Division II).  What’s more, the current winning streak against such programs is 17 games.

If HBU has any hope of making this contest interesting into the second half, it would stand to reason that they are going to have to make it a shootout.  That’s what they did against North Texas by putting up 569 yards of offense (480 through the air).

The problem for tonight’s visitors is that they simply don’t appear to have the horses on defense to slow what could be an explosive Red Raider attack.  Facing a UNT team that was starting a QB for the first time in his career, they surrendered an absurd 721 yards of offense.  Being as 360 of those yards came on the ground, SaRodorick Thompson and the Red Raider running backs have to be licking their chops.

So it is easy to envision Tech getting off to a 1-0 start this year.  But while this game likely won’t provide a ton of intrigue, we had best enjoy it because business picks up significantly in the season’s second game.
