Key players should make their 2020 debut this week

A team that only managed to beat an FCS opponent by two points in week one needs all the reinforcements it can get.  Fortunately for the Red Raiders, three key defensive players should be added to the mix this weekend.

The first is Arizona transfer Colin Schooler.  The nation’s current career leader in tackles for loss with 46 didn’t play in week one and that was a disappointment for Red Raider fans.

Expect Schooler to be a key factor in trying to keep UT quarterback Sam Ehlinger from gashing the Red Raiders on the ground.  What’s more, he is a brilliant player who always seems to be in the right place, something that his teammates didn’t manage to accomplish all that often against Houston Baptist.

Another Red Raider who could help solidify the defense this week is JaMarcus Ingram.  The former transfer from Utah State is one of Tech’s most experienced defensive backs and he has the ability to play both corner and safety.  Both are positions where Tech was exposed in week one and perhaps adding Ingram, who by all accounts was one of the best defensive backs on the roster during fall practice, might give the secondary some much-needed stability.

Finally, the Red Raiders will be adding a new face to the mix this weekend in Tyree Wilson.  The former Texas A&M Aggie joined the Red Raiders in August and now he’s received a waiver from the NCAA to be able to play this season.

At 6-foot-6, 280-pounds, the defensive end is a potential difference-maker along the line of scrimmage.  Just a sophomore this season, he appeared in all 12 games last year for A&M registering 12 tackles and a sack as a true freshman.  While he may not prove to be the second coming of Montae Reagor or Aaron Hunt just yet, he will give Tech another talented piece to rotate through the defensive line and that could help combat the tempo offense that the Horns will utilize this weekend.
