…Iowa State has a hangover

Make no mistake, last Saturday night was special for Iowa State and its fans.  The 37-30 win over Oklahoma was the first time in 60 years the people in Ames were able to celebrate a home victory over the Sooners and just the 7th time in the 85-game history of the series that the Cyclones have beaten the conference’s premier program.

Now, they have to come up with a way to play with as much passion against little ole’ Texas Tech.  Perhaps that will lead to a hangover today and that could be enough to let the Red Raiders hang around all afternoon.

The problem here for Tech is that in recent years, ISU has not fallen victim to the hangover after big wins.  That’s a credit to the culture that Matt Campbell has built in his four years on the job.

After beating No. 19 Texas last year, the Cyclones then dispatched of Kansas 41-31 the next week.  In 2018, they took care of an unranked Tech team after back-to-back wins over No. 25 Oklahoma State and No. 6 West Virginia.  Following a win over No. 3 OU in 2017, Iowa State won three-straight games, including one over Tech as well as one over No. 4 TCU.

But who knows what will happen in this crazy 2020 season.  ISU has already been upset by a Louisiana team that they likely overlooked to begin the year and we are dealing with college-age players so lapses in focus and intensity are always possible.  Here’s hoping that the “fat little girlfriends” in Ames have been loud and full of flattery this week.  If they have, then there’s a chance that Tech could spring a trap on the Cyclones.
