Texas Tech football: 3 Red Raiders that played well against Cyclones
QB Henry Colombi
If there was a star of the game for the Red Raiders, it would have to be Henry Colombi. The problem is that the backup QB didn’t get his chance to shine until long after the game had been decided.
Taking over for the ineffective Alan Bowman in the middle of the fourth quarter, the Utah State transfer was able to provide enough of a spark in his two drives to further his case for being the Red Raiders’ starter moving forward.
On Saturday, Colombi completed 10 of 12 passes for 115 yards and a TD (his team’s only offensive score). That came on the heels of a strong showing against KSU and it has made Colombi the most popular player on the team these days as Red Raider fans desperately search for something that will provide this team with a spark.
When you combine his work against the Wildcats and the Cyclones, Colombi has now played what amounts to a full game. His numbers from those two games, 40-54 passing (74.1%) for 359 yards with 3 TDs and a pick, would constitute the type of performance in a game that would be good enough to give his team a chance to win most weeks.
In Colombi’s two drives, he led Tech to seven first downs. That’s only one less than the offense had for the rest of the game.
There’s no question which QB on this roster gives his team a better shot at winning and who has the better command of the offense at this time. It’s just a shame that we didn’t see more of Colombi on Saturday.
