…Tech can win the turnover battle

I feel like every week I keep hoping that this is the game that Tech figures out how to create enough turnovers to change a game.  And every week, I am disappointed.

Head coach Matt Wells loves to talk about how when the turnovers come “they come in bunches”.  But the problem is that those games in which this defense, which is supposedly designed to create turnovers in droves, doesn’t take the ball away with enough consistency.

In fact, it’s been seven games since Tech was able to force more than three turnovers in a game.  The last time they did, it was against West Virginia in Morgantown last November.

That day, Tech won the turnover battled 4-0 to grab a 38-17 win. Can they repeat that type of effort today?

The good news is that West Virginia isn’t all that great at hanging on to the football.  They are tied for No. 6 in the Big 12 in turnover margin at -1.  The team they are tied with is…you guessed it…Texas Tech.

In every Big 12 game this year, the Mountaineers have turned the ball over at least once.  And they already have a four-turnover game against Baylor.

It’s time for one of those high-turnover games from the Red Raider defense.  Last year, the defense had games of five and four takeaways and if another one comes around today, Tech will come out on top.
