Texas Tech football: The top 5 Red Raider moments of 2020
No. 3: Jonathan Garibay kicks Tech past Baylor
After the complete farce that robbed the Red Raiders of a potential OT game-winner in Waco last year, Red Raider fans desperately wanted to hand the Bears a loss this year in the first rendition of this rivalry to be played in Lubbock since 2008.
However, the fact that Baylor entered the game just 1-4 while Tech was 2-5 robbed this game of so much juice. Therefore, for it to be a memorable night in Lubbock, we needed an unusual story to play out and that’s just what happened.
In this game, junior kicker Jonathan Garibay got his first opportunity to be Tech’s primary kicker. Prior to that, Trey Wolff had manned that position but by going just 1-5 on the year, he lost his job to Garibay, who had never attempted a FG for the Red Raiders.
The California native was superb that night making all four of his field goals, including a pair from over 40 yards. He also booted the game-winner as time expired to give Tech a 24-23 win.
But that wasn’t all Garibay was asked to do that night. He also had to handle the punting duties thanks to an injury to regular punter Austin McNamara.
He performed well in that role as he averaged 49.4 yards on four punts. And to make this storybook night even more like something out of a TV show was the fact that his family was there to see him perform for the first time.
Having not seen his relatives in a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Garibay was surprised by their arrival at practice the day prior to the game. It truly was a moment fit for a Hollywood movie and it was made all the more satisfying because Garibay’s heroics would take down Baylor, which Tech owed some retribution to.
