Cumbie is a strong recruiter
The first and best way for Tech to turn around its fortunes is to bring better players into the program. That’s where Cumbie’s prowess as a recruiter could be a huge asset.
Having mined the fertile Dallas-Fort Worth talent base for the vast majority of his coaching career, Cumbie is now considered an excellent recruiter. That’s not necessarily what David Youst was known for.

According to 247Sports, Cumbie landed five four-star players at TCU, including three QBs. At Texas Tech, he was also instrumental in the recruitment of a 2014 signee from Whitehouse Texas known as Patrick Mahomes.
"“Sonny’s a really good recruiter,” Wells said. “You know, as I talk to high school coaches, [he’s] very very highly-respected and known, not only just in the state of Texas and west Texas but also in the Metroplex…”"
Of course, recruiting DFW is an important pipeline for the Texas Tech football program. That’s where Cumbie could pay huge dividends for this program.
Remember that most of Wells’ staff came with him from Utah State and few had strong ties to the DFW area prior to their arrival in Lubbock. But that’s not the case for Cumbie.
247Sports lists ten of his top 20 all-time recruits as being from the Metroplex. So we can be certain that Cumbie will continue to try to bring players from that talent-rich area to Texas Tech.
