Shough’s strengths

Wreck ‘Em Red: “What does Shough do well as a QB?”

Phillips:

"“When Tyler Shough was given adequate time in the pocket, his passing was dead on to his wide receivers. There were also times in games where he had to improvise and tuck and run. While there was really nothing ‘sexy’ about it, he was able to get the job done to flip the down marker when he needed to.”"

Thoughts:

Entering the 2020 season, Oregon had tons of questions about the offensive line and it sounds like that remained a problem all year.  So too did Texas Tech, which also didn’t get many positive answers at that position.

But remember that protecting Shough’s blindside was Penei Sewell, the best lineman in the nation and the odds-on favorite to be the first offensive lineman selected in the spring’s NFL Draft.  Tech won’t have a player of that caliber to protect Shough next season.

But what you have to like is that Phillips says that Shough was a spot-on passer when given time.  That simply wasn’t the case for either Bowman or certainly Henry Colombi.

Also, remember that OC Sonny Cumbie will be running an offense that is more out of the “Air Raid” mold meaning that distributing the ball quickly and in stride will be essential for whoever wins the job.  It sounds like Shough could be that type of player (he completed 63.5% of his passes in 2020) but like every QB, he’ll need time from his o-line.
