He’s already proven he can win big at Tech

The biggest reason Tech is a better fit for Beard than UT is that he’s already proven that he can win at the highest levels in Lubbock.  Thus, why leave a program that you have hand-crafted into a national power?

This decision isn’t going to be about money.  Both schools will pay him handsomely.  It also isn’t going to be about location as he loves Texas Tech as much as he loves UT given that he’s spent more time as a Red Raider than he has as a Longhorn.

Rather, this decision will be about which program he feels he can win with.  Recent history suggests that he can win it all at Texas Tech (he came within one possession of doing that in 2019).  Meanwhile, Texas hasn’t won a tournament game since 2012.

What’s more, in the past three NCAA Tournaments, no team has won more NCAA Tournament games than the nine Tech has won (though Gonzaga can surpass that number by reaching the title game).  Nothing is better proof that winning at the highest levels is possible at Texas Tech.

Only time will tell what Beard will do.  In fact, we don’t even know that he is UT’s No. 1 candidate.  But regardless of how this all plays out, it will be tough to convince anyone in scarlet and black that Texas Tech isn’t the better fit for him.  Now, here’s hoping that he sees it that way as well.
