Texas Tech football: Hidden moments in victory over SFA
Schooler breaks up pass on 4th down
With 1:30 to play in the third quarter, SFA rolled the dice on another 4th down. Needing just three yards to keep the drive alive, Carthel went for it from his own 42 trailing 21-13.
On the play, SFA tried to hit their tight end on a simple curl route. But coming up big for Tech was linebacker Colin Schooler who reached around the receiver and knocked the ball away.
It was one of only three times on the evening that Tech would hold off SFA on a 4th-down try. And while it wasn’t the biggest 4th-down stop of the night, it was an important one.
Schooler has been simply fantastic this season. He was one of four Red Raiders to tie for the team lead in tackles with seven, five of which were solo. It is the second-straight game in which he’s been Tech’s leading tackler.
But Schooler does more than just rack up tackles. He also is a savvy pass defender, as evidenced by his two pass defenses in this game and he’s a quality pass rusher who was credited with three QB pressures on Saturday night.
Ultimately, this 4th-down stop didn’t lead to any points for Tech as the ensuing possession would end with the wild Tyler Shough strip-sack that saw SFA gain around 30 yards of field possession on the recovery. But in what would turn out to be a one-score game, it was important to thwart any Lumberjack possession and that’s what Schooler did by breaking up this pass on 4th down.
