WR Kaylon Geiger

It’s time for senior wide receiver Kaylon Geiger to finally show why the Texas Tech football team brought him into the fold this offseason.  That’s because this offense is desperate for a weapon other than Erik Ezukanma to emerge as a real option in the passing game.

So far, Geiger has been a bit of a disappointment.  With only three receptions for 11 yards, he’s not yet proven to be the type of player that he was at Troy where, in two seasons, he caught 141 passes for 1,625 yards and 8 TDs.

Tech has been a big-play offense this year but it’s all been Ezukanma’s doing in the passing game.  But it was expected that Geiger would also be able to pick up yards in chunks given that at Troy he averaged 11.9 yards per reception.

However, thus far, Tech’s only way to get him the ball has been on horizontal routes and plays close to the line.  It’s even tough to recall one play where the Red Raiders have tried to get the ball to Geiger down the field.

At some point, either Geiger or another Red Raider wide receiver will have to prove capable of making defenses pay, or else the offense is going to struggle in Big 12 play.  Geiger was brought to Lubbock to be such an option and it’s time we begin to see that come to fruition.
