Any slot receiver

We entered this season believing that the Red Raiders were stocked with talent at the slot receiver position.  But so far, none of the players at that spot have done anything to positively impact the passing game.

In fact, the three players who man that spot (Myles Price, McLane Mannix, and Dalton Rigdon) have managed only three receptions and 15 yards between them.  That can’t continue for the Red Raider offense if it wants to put up enough points to compete with the stout defenses that it is about to start encountering.

Now, in fairness, we must note that the offense simply has not had the football much in the first two games.  Averaging just 51 plays per game thus far, Tech has been limited in how much of its offense it can actually get into.

What’s more, the success of the ground game has meant that Tech has run the ball 10 times more than throwing it through two games.  And with the emphasis on getting the ball to Ezukanma, it’s been slim pickings for the Tech inside receivers.

Still, at some point, Tech’s slot receivers are going to have to make plays against tough zone defenses, especially as teams start to double and triple-team Ezukanma.  So let’s see if they can emerge as viable weapons tonight because it is time for the inside receivers to begin contributing to this offense in a meaningful way.
