Bryce Ramirez is set to return from a gruesome injury

Maybe it’s because the broken leg he suffered last season came in just the year’s third game or maybe it’s because he’s never been a long-term starter at Tech but for some reason, Bryce Ramirez’s comeback from the gruesome injury he suffered at N.C. State isn’t being talked about much.

Head coach Joey McGuire was asked about Ramirez during Big 12 Media Days on Thursday and he affirmed that the senior from Missouri City, Texas would be back in action this fall.  However, that story isn’t receiving quite the attention that it should.

After all, Ramirez was already a great success story even before his career took an unfortunate turn in Raleigh, N.C.  After being a scout team player for his first two years and then just a special teams contributor in 2021, the outside linebacker was able to earn a starting job on the Texas Tech defense last season as he persevered and waited for his opportunity rather than jumping into the portal as so many players with a similar path might have elected to do.

Of course, we didn’t get to see what he could bring to the table because of the horrifying broken leg that ended his season after just two full games played.  In fact, his injury was so bad that he had to have immediate surgery and remain in North Carolina for nearly a week after the game.

Now, he’s set to make a triumphant return to the field and when he does, it will be one of the best moments of 2023.  What’s more, if he is back to 100% health, he could be an important cog in the Red Raider defense as a pass rusher.

Even if his contributions this year are modest though, just the fact that Ramirez has put in the work to come back to the field is remarkable given the nature of his leg injury.  That’s why Texas Tech football fans need to be talking about this inspiring story more than we are.
