Every college football fan in the nation will be checking out Florida State and LSU

It’s a shame that Sunday’s Florida State vs. LSU matchup isn’t being played in Tallahassee or Baton Rouge.  However, the neutral-site contest in Orlando should still be full of juice as a top-10 matchup.

The only matchup of ranked teams this week, this contest could immediately eliminate a contender from the playoff race.

LSU was a surprise in 2022 by reaching the SEC title game in year one of the Brian Kelly era.  Though he is weird and awkward when trying to be hip and relevant, Kelly can coach and he appears to have the Tigers on the ascent.

However, his defense will be a question with an all-new secondary and with star DT Mason Smith suspended for this game.  However, dynamic QB Jayden Daniels is a big play waiting to happen and the LSU offense could make up for the shortcomings of the defense.

Florida State doesn’t appear to have many glaring weaknesses, though.  Mike Norvell has recruited at a high level and now that talent is starting to shine.

QB Jordan Travis is in for a big year and he will have an excellent offensive line in front of him.  What’s more, the FSU ground game was lethal a year ago and looks to be just as solid this year.

On the other side of the ball, FSU returns virtually all of a defense that made massive strides in 2022.  That unit is a big reason why the Noles won 10 games last fall.

This game could be a slugfest for 60 minutes.  Two tradition-laden programs with playoff aspirations will make this the can’t-miss game of the week, especially with no NFL football on Sunday.

It’s just too bad that this matchup is taking place off campus.  These programs have two of the best home environments in the nation and having this game played on either campus would be magical.  Still, this is a game that will be worth dedicating a few hours to because it will shape the 2023 title race landscape right off the bat.
