What a game.
What a way to earn your spot in the Women’s College World Series semifinals. The Texas Tech Red Raiders, with their backs against the wall, showed up and managed to survive a back-and-forth high scoring affair. The Texas Tech softball team just survived nine innings of chaos against the UCLA Bruins.
I feel like I can exhale now, for what that’s worth.
It was stressful and there were sprinklers that went off late in the game, for some reason. But Texas Tech was able to go into an elimination game after falling short against the Tennessee Lady Volunteers and they bounced back in the exact sort of way that they needed to.
Gerry Glasco and the Red Raiders are still alive. They’ve still got a chance.
Women’s College World Series bracket update: Texas Tech softball headed to WCWS semifinals after eliminating the UCLA Bruins
With the Nebraska Cornhuskers eliminated earlier in the day, here’s what the top half of the Women’s College World Series bracket still looks like as we enter the semifinals:
- Texas Longhorns - 2 wins, 1 loss (facing elimination)
- Tennessee Lady Volunteers - 2 wins, 0 losses
- Game 11 - June 1 at 11 a.m.
- Game 12 (if necessary) - June 1 at 1:30 p.m.
With this being a double elimination situation, the Longhorns still have a chance. All they have to do is go out and get a couple of wins over the Lady Volunteers. Which, you know, that is absolutely easier said than done. Tennessee has looked phenomenal and unstoppable over the past couple of days and I’m not totally sure that the Longhorns can do it.
That said, Texas is still alive and therefore still has a chance. Also, it's worth noting that I’ve been wrong about plenty of things before.
So, with the UCLA Bruins heading home to Los Angeles after getting eliminated by the Texas Tech Red Raiders, here’s what the bottom half of the Women’s College World Series bracket looks like as we enter the semifinals:
- Texas Tech Red Raiders - 2 wins, 1 loss (facing elimination)
- Alabama Crimson Tide - 2 wins, 0 losses
- Game 13 - June 1 at 6 p.m.
- Game 14 (if necessary) - June 1 at 8:30 p.m.
For Texas Tech, this isn’t going to be easy. Or at least I don’t suspect that it will be. The Red Raiders have really been challenged in their last couple of games and there’s no way that Alabama doesn’t make things tricky for Glasco and his team. They haven’t been beaten in Oklahoma City for good reason. They’re really, really good.
But the Red Raiders still have a chance. Just like Texas, they can go out and keep winning. There’s just no margin for error at this point. So, you know, let’s just not lose. Seems simple enough, right?
