The Texas Tech Red Raiders have one of the best softball teams in the country, but they sure didn’t play like it on Saturday afternoon in the 2026 Gainesville Super Regional. Game two of the best-of-three series between the Red Raiders and the Florida Gators didn’t even remotely go Texas Tech’s way.
The Red Raiders fell behind early, attempted a midgame comeback about halfway through the game, and then completely and totally fell apart. Texas Tech was trailing 5-2 by the time the top of the 5th inning came around. When we got to the bottom of the 5th inning, Texas Tech was trailing 9-2.
I don’t know about you, but that feels bad.
And it doesn’t exactly feel any better that the Red Raiders ended up losing 10-2. Texas Tech just couldn’t find any sort of magic or answer and the Florida Gators cruised to an easy, crushing win over the Red Raiders.
With that eight-run loss, here’s a few of the most alarming stats that popped up from Game 2.
Florida had the same number of extra base hits in this game as Texas Tech had hits
This is a bad one, but Texas Tech managed to get a grand total of five hits in this game. The Red Raiders, one of the most prolific hitting teams in the country, were completely and totally limited at the plate by Keagan Rothrock. Meanwhile, Texas Tech’s pitching staff was unable to limit anything that the Gators tried at the plate.
As such, Florida ended up racking up 14 hits in this game, five of which were extra base hits. Taylor Shumaker had a double, Kenleigh Cahalan had a double, Elle Wesolowski had a double, Jocelyn Erickson hit a home run, and Madison Walker hit a home run.
You’re not going to win many games if you’re getting the same number of hits as what your opponent is getting extra base hits. Thus, you know, a 10-2 loss.
The Red Raiders struggled to take advantage of Keagan Rothrock’s command issues, which is bad
One of the most intriguing things about the way the Red Raiders lost this game is how Keagan Rothrock completely and totally shut Texas Tech’s bats down. She threw a complete game and only allowed five hits and two earned runs to the Red Raiders.
But it’s not like Rothrock was completely perfect in the circle. There were some command issues at times in this game. She gave up a couple of walks, but she also hit three batters with pitches in this game.
And yet, despite all of that, Texas Tech only managed to score a couple of runs against her. The Red Raiders couldn’t get enough contact and they couldn’t do anything when runners were aboard. 10 runners were stranded by the Red Raiders. That’s also bad.
Texas Tech being completely and totally unable to get a hit with a runner in scoring position isn’t a good thing
And then along those lines, Texas Tech didn’t do much at all when getting a runner into scoring position. The Red Raiders couldn’t take advantage of their opportunities and ultimately Texas Tech ended up being 0-for-7 at the plate when runners were in scoring position.
And the batters leaving runners in scoring position? Some of the best hitters on Texas Tech’s roster. And all of that is frustrating when you consider how the Red Raiders were hitting, as a team, with a collective batting average well above .380 prior to the start of this Super Regional.
