The head coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders sure seems impressed by one of his contemporaries offensive coordinators. When given the opportunity to talk about Oregon Ducks head football coach Dan Lanning, Texas Tech Red Raiders head coach Joey McGuire also took the opportunity to talk about Will Stein, the offensive coordinator up in Eugene, Oregon.
The 36-year-old Stein has been with Lanning and the Ducks for a few years now, but he’s certainly a young coach and sure seems to be an innovative offensive mind who will have the opportunity to move up to be a head coach at some point soon (assuming he wants it that is).
And McGuire sure seems to be aware of that. During an episode of the What’s Next! with Joey McGuire podcast, the head coach of the Red Raiders very quickly praised Stein after chatting about the head coach at Oregon.

“I know his OC really well,” McGuire said, referencing Stein. “Will actually was a high school coach at Lake Travis and then he was at UTSA.”
To get even more specific, Stein coached at Lake Travis from 2018 to 2019 and then made his way to the UTSA Roadrunners, where he stayed from 2020 to 2022, moving from passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach on up to co-offensive coordinators/quarterbacks coach.
Then, Stein made the jump to the Oregon Ducks in 2023 and has been with Lanning in Eugene ever since.
“He’s going to be a great head coach,” McGuire continued. “I mean, he’ll be a guy that’ll be a head coach at some point. Good, really good guy.”
I mean, given everything we know about how McGuire likes to surround himself with coaches who have aspirations of becoming head coaches and also the way he appreciates former high school coaches, I wouldn’t be shocked at all if McGuire had wanted to hire Stein to join one of his staffs at some point.
Clearly that didn’t happen and it seems unlikely to ever happen at any point ever, but I still can appreciate the way that McGuire appreciates his contemporaries and the guys he’s going to compete against.
