In terms of roster building, it seems like Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raider football team will continue to be able to thrive moving forward. It really seems like the Red Raiders will be able to pull together a pool of resources to be able to build routinely impressive football teams as we continue to wade into the weird waters of this new era of college football.

A great example of that is how, when Matt Ludwig was released from his signing with the Michigan Wolverines following the firing of now former head coach Sherrone Moore in light of a number of stunning allegations, Texas Tech and McGuire were able to very quickly and effectively beat out a number of other suitors for Ludwig’s commitment

Ludwig still hasn’t signed yet, he’s just a commit for the moment, but it was within a day of Ludwig leaving Michigan’s signing class that he ended up committing to the Red Raiders.

And that feels a little significant.

Now, with Ludwig on board, it’s becoming more and more evident that the Red Raiders will continue to thrive on the recruiting trail (and they’re currently leading the pack in the Big 12, which shouldn’t shock anyone).

Texas Tech holds top spot in Big 12 recruiting rankings following Matt Ludwig committing to the Red Raiders after Sherrone Moore’s firing

According to 247 Sports, here’s how the Big 12 recruiting classes stand following Ludwig flipping from the Wolverines to Texas Tech in the wake of Moore’s firing by Michigan. Of course, these rankings aren’t by the number of players committed, but I think there are a few noteworthy numbers in the commitment count across the board, so let’s include that as well.

  • Texas Tech Red Raiders - 22 commits
  • BYU Cougars - 21 commits
  • West Virginia Mountaineers - 49 commits (well, it really looks like Rich Rod is overhauling the entire roster there)
  • TCU Horned Frogs - 23 commits
  • Arizona Wildcats - 21 commits
  • Utah Utes - 17 commits (I’m curious to see how this might change following Kyle Whittingham stepping down after the bowl game)
  • Arizona State Sun Devils - 19 commits
  • Houston Cougars - 18 commits
  • Kansas State Wildcats - 21 commits (I’m willing to be they’ll be active in the transfer portal with their brand new head coach)
  • Kansas Jayhawks - 18 commits
  • Cincinnati Bearcats - 22 commits
  • Colorado Buffaloes - 13 commits (that feels alarmingly low, but Deion Sanders has thrived in the transfer portal in the past and I bet he tries his luck there again)
  • Baylor Bears - 12 commits (there aren’t too many reasons to be overly optimistic in Waco right now, but they’ll need to do something in a hurry to improve)
  • UCF Knights - 14 commits
  • Oklahoma State Cowboys - 15 commits (hey, look, another instance in which I think a new head coach will bring a bunch of talent over via the transfer portal)
  • Iowa State Cyclones - 12 commits (they need help)

Texas Tech is in a great position right now and if the Red Raiders can continue the momentum, then things are going to be really exciting when we start getting a closer look at what the roster looks like heading into next season.
