Well, it looks like the defending Big 12 champs might end up having a pretty big quarterback depth problem yet again.
Given that Brendan Sorsby is stepping away for a bit to receive treatment for a gambling addiction (and the related NCAA investigation attached to that) and that Will Hammond is still recovering from a season-ending injury, the quarterback room in Lubbock might not be as solid as some were expecting it to be.
Sorsby arrived in Lubbock with 7208 passing yards, 60 touchdowns through the air, 22 rushing scores, and was one of the highest rated quarterbacks to hit the transfer portal. He was specifically brought to Lubbock to help replace Behren Morton, who went to the New England Patriots in the 7th round of the 2026 NFL Draft after completing 219 of 332 pass attempts for 2780 yards and 22 touchdowns.
But now there’s going to be questions about his availability moving forward. And given that Texas Tech is also having to wait for Hammond to recover, things get a little squirrely for the Red Raiders, just as they did last season as Morton got hurt and then Hammond was injured.
The Texas Tech Red Raiders might have a QB depth issue given Sorsby’s leave and Will Hammond’s injury
Now, it’s worth remembering that Hammond and Sorsby aren’t the only quarterbacks on the roster.
There is Kirk Francis, who left the Tulsa Golden Hurricane to join the Red Raiders. While he was at Tulsa, Francis completed 58.4 percent of his passes for 3045 yards and 18 touchdowns against 13 interceptions in 18 games.
Lloyd Jones III was a 4-star recruit coming out of high school and, like Holden Phillips, redshirted last year. But both of these guys are young and don’t really have much playing experience. Then there’s Stephen Cannon, a true freshman who was a 3-star recruit out of high school.
None of that feels ideal for the Red Raiders, who were looking to build upon the success that they had a season ago. Texas Tech’s offense averaged 461.4 yards per game last season and really ran the ball well. With Cameron Dickey and J’Koby Williams, it seems like TTU can focus on that side of things again this season.
But having someone at quarterback who can move the ball up and down the field would be nice to have. We’ll see how Texas Tech accounts for this.
