CFB fans seem annoyed that Texas Tech is out-recruiting the rest of the Big 12

With Joey McGuire at the helm (and the help of some very generous NIL pushes), the Texas Tech football program has been able to accumulate quite a bit of talent in its recent recruiting classes. And if you take a look at what the Red Raiders are doing on the recruiting trail right now, you’ll see that Texas Tech has a good bit of momentum (and a fair bit of talent) committed to play in Lubbock as part of the next recruiting class.

That’s a good thing. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

But there are some college football fans that, for one reason or another, may not be all that enthused with the way the Red Raiders are recruiting. For some reason, they don’t seem to love that Texas Tech has the most talented recruiting class in the Big 12 for the next recruiting cycle.

Right now, of the 10 most talented players (per how Rivals and On3 are rankings recruits) for the 2027 class that are committed to play in the Big 12, the Red Raiders have commitments from eight of them. And of course, oil money, NIL, and a perceived changing of the college football landscape were a few frequently referenced topics from college football fans who observed that news.

College football fans react as the Texas Tech Red Raiders continue to land the most talented recruits in the Big 12

Here’s what college football fans (from outside of Lubbock) had to say about the Red Raiders getting commitments from the most talented players interested in playing in the Big 12 next season:

Other Big 12 fans seem a little annoyed. Or maybe they’re alarmed? I supposed there’s a few different ways to read that one.

And folks outside of the Big 12 seem to have a few thoughts as well.

If Texas Tech can keep recruiting like this, it seems likely that McGuire and the Red Raiders will continue to ruffle some feathers outside of Lubbock. Which, you know, isn’t a bad thing at all. It’s not a bad thing that a program that has been historically overlooked and a bit of an underdog has found a way to compete with a few blue blood programs. It’s not a bad thing at all that the Red Raiders are poised to continue ascending as a program.

Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Other programs are indeed spending money as well. It just seems like Texas Tech might be a bit better at that than some other teams out there.

And for folks who seem to believe that money is new in college football recruiting, I’d like to point you to the way that programs have been doing this for decades. This sort of thing isn’t really all that new. It’s just clear that the Red Raiders are benefitting from the fact that it’s allowed these days (and for some reason that is ruffling feathers).
