I love that Donovan Atwell has a fascinating and slightly unconventional shot selection. Because it really seems like he completely and totally lives behind the three point line for the Red Raiders. He thrives in shooting from deep and Texas Tech certainly needs that, especially in light of JT Toppin’s injury and the increased workload on Christian Anderson.Â
And for the Red Raiders in their matchup with the Cincinnati Bearcats, Atwell’s shot selection was fascinating. It was all or nothing. He was going to shoot threes and only threes. Nothing else was on his radar when facing the Bearcats.
And it worked out for Texas Tech. It worked out so dang well. The approach and avoidance of even a single two pointer paid off.
Donovan Atwell didn’t need to do anything but shoot threes for Texas Tech vs CincinnatiÂ
Atwell managed to score 12 points for the Red Raiders and every single shot was a result of a three-point attempt. There wasn’t one single instance of Atwell shooting from inside the arc all evening. He spaced the floor, took a shot, and made a solid percentage of them.Â
On 4-of-9 shooting, Atwell got those 12 points. And I love that for him. He now has 104 made three pointers on the season, which has allowed him to continue to build upon the Texas Tech single season record that he now owns.Â
On the season, Atwell is now shooting 45.6 percent from three. He’s one of the best in both the Big 12 and the nation when it comes to shooting from deep.Â
His role in this offense is pretty clear. Atwell does a great job of creating space for Christian Anderson to drive the offense in. And that role is only going to become increasingly more important with Texas Tech having to account for Toppin being out.
He has now thrived against both Kansas State and Cincinnati. We’ll see how he does when facing the Iowa State Cyclones.
