The whole situation surrounding Brendan Sorsby is a tricky one, but it’s looking more and more likely that the expected starting quarterback for the Red Raiders may not be available for the Texas Tech football team this season.

Right now, much of the discussion for this situation has been centered around whether or not Sorsby should be allowed to play for the Red Raiders this coming season and if his punishment from the NCAA is the right move or a good decision. And there’s plenty to talk about there.

But something I appreciate is that ESPN’s Heather Dinich took a look at this and made it clear that there’s a practical implication for the Red Raiders in all of this.

Because one of the biggest reasons that Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders even dipped into the transfer portal to get a high caliber quarterback is because Will Hammond Jr. suffered an ACL injury and was going to have to recover. And that’s an injury that can take a while to recover from. But, according to Dinich, there could be some good news on that front.

ESPN’s Heather Dinich explains that Texas Tech football is still a College Football Playoff contender without Sorsby at QB

“It goes to Texas Tech's backup quarterback, quite honestly, in the college football playoff race,” Dinich said. “I talked to Texas Tech’s head coach Joey McGuire about that and his backup Will Hammond Jr. tore his ACL. He’s expected to be cleared by August 21 and should be able to do 7-on-7’s.”

Folks, that’s huge.

Now, it should be stated that being cleared to do 7-on-7’s is very different than being cleared to actually go play. But still, if the Red Raiders are able to get Hammond healthy (and can keep him healthy), then they may not need Sorsby whatsoever. Now, depth is a little thin behind Hammond at that point. You’ve got Kirk Francis who transferred from Tulsa and then there’s a bit of a gap.

But still, that’s huge. Especially if Texas Tech can lean into maximizing its running game without Hammond. Given how good the Red Raiders’ defense is, this is team that should win a lot this coming season.

“Big picture college football, it makes the Big 12 race more intriguing,” Dinich continued. “You should have BYU, Arizona in the mix. Texas Tech is still a college football playoff contender without Sorsby in the mix.”
