It has been common for the family members of former Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes II to be in the news. Unfortunately, it has often been for the wrong reasons. Now, in fact, his father, Patrick Mahomes Sr. is making headlines for agreeing to a wild stunt.
Wednesday, Barstool Sports president Dave Portnoy announced on X that Mahomes Sr. and fellow former MLB pitcher John Rocker will face off in a boxing match. The event will be sponsored by Barstool Sports and will take place on April 19.
This farce of a match came about after Mahomes Sr. and Rocker were caught on video having a heated exchange outside of a New Orleans restaurant following Sunday's Super Bowl LIX. Though there is no indication of what started the incident, the two men had to be separated from one another by onlookers.
Since then, the two have exchanged biting remarks on social media. Now, it appears that they will settle their beef in the ring.
"I guess they (expletive) hated each other since their playing days, baseball. I mean I guess not surprising everyone has beef with John Rocker. But they signed the (expletive) paperwork," Portnoy said. "Guess what we got, boys and girls, Rough N' Rowdy April 19th, Wheeling West Virginia."
Of course, the always attention-seeking Portnoy is trying to get Patrick Mahomes II involved in this stunt despite the fact that the younger Mahomes has voiced his dislike of Barstool Sports in the past.
"And just to show that I don't hold grudges," he said, "I know Patty Mahomes, the Super Bowl guy... the guy who just got his doors blown off... said he hated Barstool. Well, now your dad is fighting in our company against John Rocker. So I'm gonna save a seat free of charge. Patty Mahomes and crew... no bad blood... we can make up and watch your dad fight. That's an open invite. You say you don't like us, I get your dad to fight John Rocker on Rough N' Rowdy."
Unfortunately, the former Texas Tech quarterback has had to learn how to live with missteps by his family members over the years.
In February of 2024, the elder Mahomes was arrested for his third DWI. In August of last year, ESPN reported that he pleaded guilty to the charge earning him five years of probation and "intense" monitoring for 12 months.
Meanwhile, in March of 2024, Jackson Mahomes, younger brother of Patrick Mahomes II was sentenced to six months probation in a case of alleged sexual assault of a woman.
Jackson Mahomes was originally charged with three counts of aggravated sexual battery after a woman claimed that he grabbed her by the neck and kissed her while pushing her up against a wall in a restaurant. Ultimately, those charges were dropped because the complainant refused to cooperate with the case. However, he was still sentenced to probation for battery after shoving a waiter during the incident.
Fortunately, Patrick Mahomes II has managed to keep his nose clean and be nothing up an upright citizen throughout his career. Still, the mistakes his family members have made have brought unwanted attention to a man who is unquestionably the face of the NFL.
Now, his father is involved in a publicity stunt and one has to wonder how Mahomes II feels about it. This is likely the last bit of news he wanted to deal with on the heels of his team's crushing defeat in Super Bowl LIX.
