After two of the most emotionally draining and exhilerating wins of the Texas Tech softball season, the head coach of the Red Raiders made sure to give credit to the team that had a chance to eliminate Texas Tech. Following the Texas Tech softball win over Alabama, Gerry Glasco took a moment in his postgame press conference to credit the Crimson Tide for their season.
“Alabama, 56-9. What a great season, congratulations to them,” Glasco said to media members in his opening statement.
And he’s right. The Crimson Tide just made it back to the Women’s College World Series and they were just one win away from making it to the WCWS finals. Alabama was fantastic all throughout the year and looked like a truly dominant team. They earned that No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA softball tournament.
Gerry Glasco gave a classy tribute to Alabama softball and its head coach Patrick Murphy
As Glasco was giving Alabama their props, he also made sure to note the sort of impact that the Crimson Tide’s head coach has had on this sport (and on Glasco).
“Coach Murphy, his contribution to softball has been enormous,” Glasco recalled. “He told me tonight his first time here was 2000. I can remeber around 2001, 2002, I was coaching travel ball and I can remember going to Alabama. He showed me all through the locker room and all through the facilities. He was just first class, promoting the sport, and he always has been.”
There’s a lot of gratitude that Texas Tech’s head coach has for that moment. Over two decades ago, Glasco got the chance to see the innerworkings behind what Murphy was building with the Crimson Tide softball program and it’s a moment that’s stuck with him.
“It’s tremendous to get to play against him here in that setting and a great honor to get to be on the field with him,” Glasco said.
As for this particular team? Well, Texas Tech’s head softball coach has nothing but respect for it as well and he’s more than impressed with what all the Crimson Tide have accomplished as a team this season.
“56-9 aand the number one seed in the overall tournament, I tip my hat to them,” Glasco said. “I know it’s a tough way for them to go out, but when they look back, when those girls look back 25,30 years from now, they’re going to realize how good a season they had.”
And that’s such a healthy perspective. Yes, Alabama fell short of its goal, but the Crimson Tide had a remarkable year and they should be thrilled with that and proud of all they accomplished this season.
