It hasn’t really taken all that long for the Texas Tech softball program to become a legitimate national title contender. In back-to-back seasons, the Red Raiders will be making appearances in Oklahoma City to compete in the Women’s College World Series. Prior to last season, that had never happened before in program history.

But times have changed for the Red Raiders. And so much of that has to do with the way Gerry Glasco has led them and helped this program develop. Yes, much of it can be attributed to the way the Red Raiders have courted players through the transfer portal, but so much credit should be given to the head coach of this team.

Texas Tech wouldn’t be in this situation without Glasco. And he’s right to point out just how much this program has grown in just two seasons. This is a team that can go into Gainesville for a Super Regional and take two of three games.

This season was the first time the Red Raiders had ever won against the Florida Gators. And now, another trip to Oklahoma City. Something that Glasco has referred to as “a dream come true” during his postgame press conference.

Texas Tech softball head coach Gerry Glasco points to how the Red Raiders have developed into a WCWS-caliber program

“Unbelievable,” Texas Tech’s head coach said when asked of the Red Raiders’ upcoming trip to Oklahoma City. “Last year, when I got to go, it was like a dream come true for me to get to coach in the World Series.”

This whole deal is something worth celebrating, and Glasco knows that. But it seems like he’s not just celebrating for himself to be in this position.

“To get to do it again this year is really special,” Glasco continued. “And a special bunch of girls, that’s the main thing. I wanted the girls to get to go. You want to find a way to get your team there.”

And that’s the focus of his role, elevating the talent that arrives in Lubbock and putting Texas Tech in the best possible position to keep winning at every step along the way. So far, it seems to be working for the Red Raiders.

“The kids that come to your program, they come to go to the World Series,” Glasco explained. That's where we’re at. In two years, we’ve developed a program that when they come to Texas Tech, they come to go to the World Series now.”

If teams were angry with how Glasco and the Red Raiders were able to win recruiting battles in the past, it seems likely that they’ll be upset with that sort of development. There’s no doubt in my mind that the Red Raiders will be able to continue building momentum as a program, especially if they can keep getting to Oklahoma City and having success in the Women’s College World Series.

This program has come so far in just two seasons. It’ll be fascinating to see just how far this particular team can go this season (and if the Red Raiders can continue to sustain this sort of success as a program in future seasons).
