It’s really interesting to look at what Jaylen Petty accomplished for the Texas Tech Red Raiders and then to dive into how good he was. On the surface, I think a lot of folks are going to just focus on the fact that Petty put up 12 points, which is something to focus on! So far this season, Petty is averaging 9.1 points per game, so that’s a bit higher than normal, which is good!

But that’s not the only thing that Petty did against Iowa State that was particularly impressive. His scoring output and raising his season average is just scratching the surface here. Petty was all over the place for the Red Raiders in Hilton Coliseum, which is really good to see.

Beyond just scoring 12 points, Petty also managed to go out and grab nine rebounds (he was tied as one of the Red Raiders’ leading rebounders in this game, which Texas Tech desperately needs with JT Toppin’s season ending injury) and then also managed to deal out three assists for the Red Raiders.

Jaylen Petty showed incredibly versatility for the Red Raiders in Texas Tech’s 9-point win over Iowa State

The rebounding angle here is one that I think should be explored a bit as Petty managed to grab six defensive rebounds specifically. And as Blake Buchanan was going out and grabbing eight offensive rebounds for Iowa State all on his lonesome, having Petty show up to limit those opportunities for Buchanan and the Cyclones was vital.

Texas Tech really needed someone to go out and compete in that space and Petty demonstrated that he could do that.

It also helps that Petty showed he could help move the ball around a bit, which opens things up for some of the other Red Raiders on the court and any given time. Combine that with the fact that Petty managed to go 3-for-5 from three point range and it’s easy to get really excited about this sort of performance for Texas Tech.
