At least Texas Tech's close call vs. ACU provided lots of social media comedy

While no Texas Tech football fan feels good about what happened Saturday night, at least the close call vs. an FCS team provided plenty of comedy gold online.

To say that Texas Tech fans are a bit concerned following their team's 52-51 overtime "win" against Abilene Christian would be an understatement. Rather, after just one game, most Red Raiders are standing on the ledge considering whether another season of disappointment is worth enduring.

The reality is that this program continually loads the offseason hype train and plows full steam ahead through the summer telling anyone who will listen how good the upcoming season will be only to hit the breaks on that train as soon as games start.

Last season, Joey McGuire told us in the spring that the 2023 Red Raiders would beat the 2022 Red Raiders by 14 points. Then, he proclaimed at the Red Raider Club kickoff luncheon that Tech was going to win the Big 12.

What happened when games began? Tech started the season 1-3 with losses to Wyoming, Oregon, and West Virginia. That essentially killed all of the off-season good-time vibes that fans had been treated to.

This year, McGuire was a bit less outspoken in the offseason about what his team would accomplish. However, the Red Raiders head coach and his staff continually bragged about their defensive depth and how they were two deep at almost every position.

But the first time that they had an opportunity to show that the bluster was worth listening to, they went out and gave up over 600 yards of total offense to an FCS team filled to the brim with guys who didn't make it at FBS programs and who had to spin down to the lower level to find a place to play.

Now, the Red Raider fan base is having traumatic flashbacks to the 2015 and 2016 seasons when the Red Raiders had the second-worst and then the worst statistical defense in America respectively. Thus, the vibe around Raiderland isn't blue skies and rainbows and sunbeams from Heaven.

Rather, the cynicism of a fan base that has grown tired of being a college football afterthought for a decade and a half is once again rising to the surface. And it only took one game! However, with that cynicism comes some comedy gold on line. So let's take a look at the best fan reactions following Texas Tech's near-death experience against Abilene Christian.
