Former Texas Tech QB Tyler Shough makes disparaging remarks about Lubbock
Though most people who've attended Texas Tech usually carry Lubbock, Texas with them in their hearts for the rest of their lives, the Hub City isn't for everyone. That appears to be the case for injury-prone former Red Raider quarterback Tyler Shough.
Now the starting quarterback at Louisville, the seventh-year senior was interviewed by a Louisville media outlet when he was asked about what Lubbock was like. Unfortunately, he didn't give a glowing review.
"It smells like cow [expletive] and wind," he said. "There's not much out there than drinking beer and doing nothing so. But really's it's just the university so it's kinda nice being out here where there's a lot of great food spots, a lot of really cool people, and there's a lot more stuff to do."
Needless to say, these remarks haven't really landed well with Texas Tech alums or fans. If Shough didn't enjoy his time in Lubbock, that's fine. However, for him to publicly disparage a community that supported him through three injury-plagued seasons was a classless move.
It would have taken no effort or thought for Shough to find something nice to say about Lubbock. He could have complimented the people who helped him through all three of the injuries he suffered during his time as Tech's starting QB. He could have spoken kindly of the university that gave him a chance to start when he was beaten out for the QB1 job at Oregon. He could have talked about teammates he enjoyed and the good times they had together. Any of those routes would have been classy and positive.
Instead, Shough came across as bitter and petty. Perhaps he is still holding a grudge over the fact that Joey McGuire and offensive coordinator Zach Kittley decided to move on from him after last season and go with Behren Morton at QB. Perhaps he's grown cynical about Lubbock because he experienced so many struggles during his time there given that all three of his seasons included major injuries that cost him several weeks. Whatever the reason, he should have been a bigger person and found something positive [or at least neutral] to say about a community that gave him so much over the past three years.
Lubbock is a special place. If Shough never found that out for himself, then it is his loss. If you want big city nightlife and accommodations, as it appears that Shough wants, then maybe Lubbock isn't where you should be. After all, most people who love the Hub City love it because of it's isolation and the freedom they get from metropolitan fuss.
Shough should have remembered the people he met, the way the community threw its full support behind him (even after he proved to be nothing but a mediocre quarterback), and the opportunities afforded to him over the past three years. And as for the smell of the cow "excrement", people in Lubbock have come to love it because it keeps people like Tyler Shough as far away as possible.
