This isn’t ideal. Gerry Glasco and the Texas Tech Red Raiders are back on the brink of elimination once more. This time, Texas Tech fell short against the Texas Longhorns in Game 1 of the Women’s College World Series championship series.

And it really didn’t feel close at all.

One bad inning really put the Red Raiders in a hole that Texas Tech was completely and totally incapable of climbing out of. Especially against a team as good as the Longhorns.

What’s so frustrating about this is Texas Tech actually jumped out to a nice little 1-0 lead after Mihyia Davis hammered a home run in the top of the first inning. Texas Tech couldn’t do anything with that lead because the Longhorns managed to put five on the board in the bottom half of the inning.

Kaitlyn Terry wasn’t able to do much against Texas, unfortunately. The Longhorns really had a feel for everything she wanted to throw their way. Unfortunately, Terry only made it through 1.1 innings. She gave up four hits and four runs in the process.

NiJaree Canady stepped in, but she didn’t exactly completely dominate this game. Canady had 1.1 innings of work herself. In that timeframe, she gave up a couple of hits and a run. Samantha Lincoln helped Texas Tech close out the game. Across 3.1 innings, Lincoln allowed four hits, walked a couple of batters, and gave up a couple of runs.

In total, Texas Tech’s typically remarkable pitching staff struck out just two batters against the Longhorns. And thus, a 7-3 loss for the Red Raiders.

And as a result of this loss, the Texas Tech softball team has to win two games without stumbling and coming up short. Glasco and his Red Raiders have been here in this sort of situation before. They managed to beat the UCLA Bruins and Alabama Crimson Tide (twice) in back-to-back-to-back games after losing to the Tennessee Lady Volunteers earlier in the WCWS.

The Red Raiders will get at least one more chance to beat Texas. If Texas Tech can bounce back and win in Game 2, then we’ll get a Game 3 matchup. Otherwise, a loss in Game 2 and the Red Raiders will be swept. Which, you know, that’s not ideal.
