Texas Tech football fans certainly have another reason to be excited about Joey McGuire and the way the Red Raiders are recruiting lately. On Wednesday, the Red Raiders were able to beat out a number of other teams (from both inside of Texas and outside of the Lone Star State) to get a commitment from one of the most talented defensive backs in the state).

Donovan Webb announced his intention to play for the Texas Tech Red Raiders Wednesday afternoon and it looks like the 4-star safety will head to Lubbock once he graduates high school.

That’s good news for Texas Tech and it continues a trend of McGuire recruiting well in Texas along with his success in getting talented defensive players to buy into the future of the Red Raider football program (which is especially important for a program that has, especially in recent history, struggled to have much success on that side of the ball).

And it’s worth noting that Texas Tech managed to beat out the likes of the Michigan Wolverines, Kansas State Wildcats, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Colorado Buffaloes, LSU Tigers, Texas A&M Aggies, Texas Longhorns and a number of other programs to get Webb’s commitment.

Texas Tech fans have every right to celebrate their recent recruiting win as Donovan Webb commits to the Red Raiders

And of course, Texas Tech fans sure are happy with this recruiting win.

I mean, it’s a big deal for Texas Tech to have this sort of recruiting success on this side of the ball. The Red Raiders haven’t been all that impressive on the defensive side of things over the past couple decades and it sure looks like McGuire and his staff are working to change that (while still thriving on offense).

Red Raider fans absolutely should be thrilled with this one.

They should be especially thrilled for the Red Raiders to get one of the highest rated defensive backs in the state of Texas.

It’s significant.

A lot of things can happen between now and signing day and I, for one, find myself looking forward to seeing who else the Red Raiders are able to get committed between now and then. There’s some work to do on the recruiting rankings side of things, Texas Tech needs some help there, but more strategic additions to this recruiting class should help with that.
