It sure seems like the Texas Tech Red Raiders will have a very real shot at competing for the Big 12 crown in 2025. And there are a number of reasons for that that we could discuss.
Whether you want to focus on the roster overhaul and talent development and the way Texas Tech built things up through the transfer portal or if you want to focus on the coaching ideology upgrades that have been made on the coaching staff, there’s plenty to discuss with the way things look for the Red Raiders in 2025.
Also, hey, you could just talk about the fact that the Texas Tech football team was in the midst of competing for a spot in the 2024 Big 12 championship game and ended up coming up short. The conference has a ton of volatility and that could certainly benefit the Red Raiders a bit.
Whichever angle you want to approach, it’s fair to note that Texas Tech should have a shot at competing for the Big 12 championship this season. And Texas Tech football fans absolutely deserve to have those sorts of expectations and feel optimistic about what this season could hold.
Heck, folks outside of Lubbock and its sphere of influence seem to believe the Red Raiders might fight for the Big 12 title this season.
Take PFF’s Max Chadwick, for example:

Texas Tech football fans have every right to be hopeful about the Red Raiders’ chances at winning the Big 12 in 2025
Understandably, that sort of quote got some folks excited and optimistic about what this coming season might hold for the Red Raiders. How could it not? It's the perfect sort of offseason content to get you excited about your team!

There’s a ton of talent in Lubbock heading into this season. Joey McGuire and the rest of the Red Raider coaching staff were able to build a team that sure looks capable of competing for a shot at the conference crown.

But will all of that talent be enough?

Of course, should the Red Raiders fall short of getting to double digit wins in 2025, folks might get a little restless out in West Texas.
We don’t win 10 and there will be conversations to be had https://t.co/J2xncmNgYg

The talent yes. There's no question about that.

They brought in as many blue chips from the portal this off-season as the rest of the #Big12 combined (12).
The question is: do they have the coaching to get them over the edge and into Arlington? https://t.co/Jdnmuy4xqp
And the criticism that would ultimately fall on McGuire for falling short of those expectations would almost certainly be pretty monumental.
Texas Tech fans certainly have the right to be optimistic here. Absolutely.
There’s too much talent on this team to not be expecting big things and to be hopeful about what this season could yield. Unfortunately though, that could cause a bit of a headache for this coaching staff if things don’t go well. Should this team not live up to the hype, then McGuire will get to be on the receiving end of a lot of frustration.
