I don’t know that Adam Hayes could have had a much better performance in the first ever home start in his career. Truly, the freshman pitcher took the mound for the Texas Tech baseball team and didn’t have a single issue all along the way.
Hayes managed to toss five scoreless innings to help set the Red Raiders up to snag a run rule victory over the New Mexico Lobos. That’s right, it didn’t take more than eight innings of play at Rip Griffin Park for Tim Tadlock’s Red Raiders to go out and get a 12-2 midweek win this week.
Combine that with the series win against the Arizona Wildcats from this past weekend and things are starting to feel at least a little better for the Red Raiders. There’s obviously a lot of ground to gain given the pitching problems, but performances like this from Hayes make it feel like things might improve in the near future.
Hayes managed to strike out four batters through five innings of work and he tended to avoid too many issues against the Lobos. He was obviously far from perfect, but Hayes performed well for the Texas Tech baseball team.
Texas Tech secures dominant midweek run-rule win over New Mexico thanks in large part to freshman pitcher Adam Hayes
Oh, and it doesn’t hurt that the Red Raiders managed to explode early, jumping out to a 6-0 lead over New Mexico in the first inning.
The Red Raiders ended up turning to Jorden Espinoza to replace Hayes on the mound. After a bit of a bumpy showing from him, Texas Tech elected to go with the trio of Logan Addison, Jonny Lowe, and Jacob Rogers to get through the remainder of the game and they delivered three scoreless innings of work.
Now, with the win, Texas Tech is 16-8 overall and 13-3 at home. The Red Raiders are also 4-2 in conference play (but that didn’t change with this win). Texas Tech will get the chance to hit the road this weekend to meet up with the TCU Horned Frogs starting Friday.
