During the 100th season of Texas Tech football and the fourth season under Joey McGuire, there are going to be a number of things that take place that we’re going to celebrate and enjoy and talk about. There’s even going to be a little bit of history here and there.

Like the fact that Arkansas-Pine Bluff will face off against the Red Raiders for the first time ever. Or the fact that the Kent State Golden Flashes have never had the chance to make a trip out to Lubbock and will thus also play a first ever game against Texas Tech.

But, it will not be a first meeting for the Red Raiders and the Oregon State Beavers when one of the Pac-12’s rebuilding members makes the trip to Lubbock. That’s because Texas Tech and Oregon State got to face each other a long, long time ago and they’ve only ever faced off against one another on one grand occasion.

All the way back in 1959. Which, you know, is a long time ago. Well over 60 years ago. And that’s the only time Oregon State and Tech have faced each other on a football field.

Also, in that meeting from a rather long time ago, the Red Raiders managed to get a one point win over the Oregon State Beavers. And it was by just one single point. I mean, pure defensive-centric football was being played in 1959. It’s not like the hurry up no huddle was around all the way back in the day.

That 15-14 win over Oregon State also happens to represent a perfect record for the Red Raiders. And I think that’s something worth celebrating. At least a little bit. I mean, we’re talking about a team that hasn’t once found a way to outsmart TTU and get a win.
