To be completely transparent, I really don’t know what to expect from the Texas Tech baseball team this season. The pitching staff is among the worst in the Big 12 when it comes to ERA (it’s sitting at 7.57 right now, which is literally the worst in the conference) and the Red Raiders STRUGGLED during opening weekend.
Despite those dreadful pitching problems and the weird way this season got started in Arlington, Texas Tech has managed to hit a bit of a stride. The Red Raiders have won a couple of series in Big 12 play and just managed to steamroll the New Mexico Lobos.
As a result, the team that was picked at No. 9 in the preseason Big 12 baseball poll is now sitting near the top of the conference, locked up in a logjam with several other interesting teams.
Big 12 baseball standings: Texas Tech sits at No. 5 in the Big 12 following the Red Raiders’ run-rule win over New Mexico
Things are crowded in the Big 12, but Texas Tech really does have a solid spot following that 12-2 win over New Mexico (and this past weekend’s series win over Arizona):
- West Virignia Mountaineers - 17-4 overall, 5-1 Big 12
- UCF Knights - 15-8 overall, 5-1 Big 12
- Arizona State Sun Devils - 18-6 overall, 4-2 Big 12
- Kansas Jayhawks - 16-8 overall, 4-2 Big 12
- Texas Tech Red Raiders - 16-8 overall, 4-2 Big 12
- Cincinnati Bearcats - 19-8 overall, 3-3 Big 12
- Kansas State Wildcats - 17-8 overall, 3-3 Big 12
- Utah Utes - 13-8 overall, 3-3 Big 12
- Oklahoma State Cowboys - 16-9 overall, 2-4 Big 12
- TCU Horned Frogs - 14-10 overall, 2-4 Big 12
- Baylor Bears - 13-11 overall, 2-4 Big 12
- BYU Cougars - 10-12 overall, 2-4 Big 12
- Arizona Wildcats - 8-15 overall, 2-4 Big 12
- Houston Cougars - 12-11 overall, 1-5 Big 12
It’ll be fun to see what happens when Texas Tech meets up with the TCU Horned Frogs this weekend following the recent series wins over the Kansas Jayhawks and the Arizona Wildcats. If Texas Tech is able to secure a series win in Fort Worth, the Red Raiders are in a great spot to continue building momentum when they return home to face Houston.
