Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders have made a number of headlines all throughout the offseason with the way they’ve been recruiting. The NIL push that Texas Tech has been able to take advantage of has yielded plenty of interesting things to talk about, including a phenomenal transfer portal class from the last recruiting cycle.
So, where does Texas Tech’s recruiting class rank right now?
At the moment, the Red Raiders have the No. 2 ranked recruiting class in the Big 12. That’s probably not where they want to be, and it’s certainly not where fans want Tech, but it’s not a bad spot. Nationally, TTU sits at No. 26 according to 247 Sports and No. 25 according to On3. Again, not bad, but not where Tech fans will want the Red Raiders in the long run.
What does Texas Tech’s recruiting class look like in terms of rankings?
At the moment, Texas Tech’s 2026 recruiting class has 19 commitments in it. That’s a fairly decent sized class for the Red Raiders to have as the offseason gets pretty close to ending.
In that group, there are 14 3-star recruits, four 4-star commits, and then Felix Ojo as Tech’s lone 5-star commitment, according to 247 Sports. The story is pretty similar for Texas Tech’s rankings over on On3, where the Red Raiders have one 5-star, two 4-stars, and 16 three-stars.
It’s not a bad group at all, but there’s still some work that needs to be done between now and when we get to signing day.
What positions is Texas Tech prioritizing in its 2026 recruiting class?
At the moment, it still really feels like Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders are going hard after defensive additions to this recruiting class. Texas Tech has four defensive linemen committed at the moment, two linebackers, and six defensive backs.
To go along with the three offensive linemen and two receivers currently committed to the Red Raiders, Texas Tech does have one quarterback in this class as well as one running back. So, yeah, there’s an emphasis on getting defense in this class.
When looking at where the players are coming from, it’s very clear that there’s an emphasis on recruiting well within the state of Texas. Which makes sense given how big the state is, how much talent there is, and the way the Red Raiders compete with a few other teams in Texas on the field thanks to being in the Big 12.
The Red Raiders currently have 16 players from the Lone Star State committed. There are just three players from other states (Georgia, Oklahoma, and Tennessee) currently committed to play for Texas Tech.
