Man, Gerry Glasco and the Texas Tech softball team sure do deserve at least a little bit of a celebration right now. With a win over the UCLA Bruins in their debut appearance in Oklahoma City for the 2025 Women’s College World Series, the Red Raiders have won their first two games and are in the WCWS semifinals.
We are talking about a situation in which the Texas Tech softball team, in their first ever trip to the Women’s College World Series, is now just one win away from earning the honor to compete for a national championship.
What a time to be a Texas Tech fan, folks.
Beating UCLA 3-1 keeps the Red Raiders in the winner’s bracket and simultaneously moves the Bruins into the elimination bracket. And Texas Tech did so in such a fun way.
Texas Tech Red Raiders advance on in 2025 Women’s College World Series after beating UCLA Bruins
This was such a great game for the Red Raiders and also it was just flat out a great college softball game to watch. We got to witness NiJaree Canady throw a dominant performance across a complete game effort as she struck out seven batters in the process and allowed just four hits (one of which was a home run, which stinks).
But you know what doesn’t stink? Seeing the Red Raiders make the VERY bold decision to steal home with Makayla Garcia in the 5th inning (which gave TTU a slim 1-0 lead over the Bruins).
While UCLA managed to tie things back up with that aforementioned solo shot home run of theirs, Texas Tech was able to return the favor in the 6th inning (shoutout to Hailey Toney) and then the Red Raiders added another run with some timely hitting from Raegan Jennings in the 7th inning.
And now the Red Raiders softball team gets to rest on Sunday instead of trying to fight and stay alive in the 2025 Women’s College World Series. And that is such a good thing. TTU will return to action on Friday and their opponent will soon be revealed after the elimination games on Sunday.
