In a matchup that featured dominant pitching and power hitting, it looks like the Tennessee Lady Vols got exactly what they could have hoped for. The Texas Tech softball team could not find any sort of consistent success at the plate and the Red Raiders ultimately fell in the bottom of the ninth inning, losing by a really low score of 2-1.

Which is a little out of the norm for this Texas Tech team. The Red Raiders have rarely been stumped at the plate. But it looks like Tennessee’s really impressive pitching staff had no issues causing issues for Texas Tech here.

This is a game that was scoreless into the bottom of the fifth inning as the Texas Tech and Tennessee pitching staffs dueled back and forth, keeping things quiet at the plate (for the most part). But in the bottom of the fifth, Taylor Holley managed to hit a solo shot home run to give Tennessee a 1-0 lead that felt absolutely insurmountable.

Thankfully, after a couple of missed opportunities, Texas Tech was able to tie things up thanks to a nail biting play at the plate as Desirae Spearman hit a sacrifice fly to score Taylor Pannell, setting the score at 1-1 and forcing extra innings.

That 1-1 tie held into the bottom of the ninth as Kaitlyn Terry was able to keep the Lady Vols from really doing anything significant. That is until Emma Clarke led off in the bottom of the ninth inning and ended the game in the process with a solo shot home run over the centerfield wall.

One of the most explosive offenses in the country was held to just one run and five hits. Texas Tech’s bats have been dominant all year long and have really helped carry the Red Raiders in the postseason. And yet, the Red Raiders weren’t able to generate anything at the plate in this game.

Now, Texas Tech gets to try and survive a matchup with the UCLA Bruins on Sunday. We’ll see how things unfold in that one. Should the Red Raiders lose, they’ll be headed home.

At this point, now that Gerry Glasco and the Red Raiders have one loss, there’s no margin for error. If Texas Tech wants to compete for a national title, the Red Raiders need to win three games in a row. No losses. Against the best teams in the country. No pressure or anything.
