No. 4: All-White 1974 throwbacks

Texas Tech’s all-white throwbacks are the perfect combination of cleanliness and pop.  And it is all set off by the fantastic helmets.

Tech first wore white helmets with the flat red Double T from 1970-73.  However, they were slightly different than the ones shown in the above image.  First of all, they had just one star on them and what’s more, the facemasks were gray.

In 1974, head coach Jim Carlen had the face masks painted red and he added a second star, which worked better because the single star (I’m not sure if the one star was a nod to the Lone Star State or not) just looked out of place on each side of the helmet.

A year later, the black helmets would become Tech’s staple.  In fact, the white lids didn’t return until 2010.  But that year’s versions featured the new beveled Double T.

When the old school logo sits atop the modern lettering and numbering of the Under Armour uniforms, it is a beautiful mix of the past and the present.  And when white is the base color for the entire uniform, the red stands out better than it does in almost any combination that Tech wears.
