Tim Tadlock needed a new pitching coach. The Texas Tech baseball team absolutely had to go in a different direction after a few really rough seasons on the mound. In 2025, we’re talking about a team that managed to go out and walk 243 opposing batters.
This is a group that really struggled. And so, because of that, Texas Tech went out and found Steve Foster in Colorado.
And while he wasn’t coaching college baseball, he was helping the Colorado Rockies out a bit with their pitching staff. Tadlock was able to convince Foster to leave Colorado in favor of having a chance to coach (and hopefully improve) the Red Raiders pitching staff.
Which, to be completely honest, Texas Tech definitely needs some help improving its pitching staff. Again, 243 walks in just one season.
That ain’t great.
The Red Raiders announced the new hire on Tuesday, but Kendall Rogers of D1 Baseball was on the news a bit sooner than that because he knows a lot about college baseball.
SCOOP: @TTU_Baseball is hiring Steve Foster as its new pitching coach, I'm told. Foster has quite the resume as he heads to Lubbock. He spent seven seasons as the big league pitching coach for the @Rockies + three more as the Director of Pitching Development for the org. #Wreckem… pic.twitter.com/b8IEPetoBC

With this news getting out there, it’s no surprise that folks had things to say about the matter. In fact, we’ve even got a few strong opinions on this hire for Texas Tech.
College baseball fans react to Tim Tadlock, Texas Tech baseball hiring Steve Foster as Red Raiders’ pitching coach
A lot of folks had, uh, some opinions on the matter given Foster’s current role and the way the Rockies have struggled on the mound in recent seasons.

Checks notes…. The Rockies have been the worst staff in Baseball for a decade. pic.twitter.com/OSEzmyfGKT

Have you watched the Rockies in the last 7 years? I wouldn’t say that’s a great pitching coach resume. https://t.co/lRQYr8ohQR

And then there were folks who were just kinda blunt about the whole thing.
Horrible hire

Other folks? Well, they had some high praises for Texas Tech’s new pitching coach.
Hopefully he can bring leadership and some energy to the club house.

We’re going to see how exactly this shakes out for Tadlock, Foster, and the Red Raiders. Texas Tech definitely needs a bit of life on the mound and the Red Raiders might just benefit from having Foster in Lubbock. We’ll see. To be completely honest, it’d be shocking if the Red Raiders weren’t, at bare minimum, just a bit better next season.
