This is completely and totally absurd. I mean, it's ridiculous. We’re not even through the first inning in Game 3 of the 2026 Gainesville Super Regional and the Florida Gators have managed to hit Texas Tech softball star Mia Williams yet again. So far this series, Williams has been hit by pitch five times. Again, we’re not even through three games.
That’s not a normal number at all and it’s coming in a high stakes matchup for Williams against her former team. And you want a little bit of extra context on how this is bad?
Prior to the Super Regional matchup with the Gators, Williams had been hit by pitch a total of four times throughout the season. That’s 61 games, 184 at-bats. She’s now more than doubled that total in just 15 innings against her former team.
Texas Tech’s Mia Williams keeps getting plunked by the Florida Gators, her former team, during the 2026 Gainesville Super Regional
Here’s how all of that has broken down:
- Game 1, Top of the 1st inning: Williams hit by pitch on a 0-0 count in the very first at-bat of the series with Keagan Rothrock pitching.
- Game 1, Top of the 5th inning: Williams hit by pitch on a 1-0 count with Katelynn Oxley pitching.
- Game 2, Bottom of the 3rd inning: Williams hit by pitch on a 0-0 count with Rothrock pitching again.
- Game 2, Bottom of the 4th inning: Williams hit by pitch on a 0-0 count with Rothrock pitching again. Florida challenged the call, claiming Williams leaned into the pitch but the call was upheld.
- Game 3, Top of the 1st inning: Williams hit by pitch on a 0-0 count with Rothrock pitching again.
And just a reminder, Williams spent her first two seasons with the Gators and was a really solid contributor for the Gators while playing in Gainesville. During those two seasons with the Gators, Williams racked up 79 hits, scored 83 runs, hit 25 home runs, and put together a .271 batting average across 124 starts.
And then she decided to transfer, joined the Texas Tech Red Raiders, and is one of the best hitters on the roster of one of the best teams in the country. This season, Williams has helped Texas Tech thrive this year. She has a .435 batting average, has scored 83 runs, has 23 home runs, and a .908 slugging percentage. She is one of the most dangerous hitters in the country for an ascendant softball program.
And the Gators keep hitting her with pitches. With either the first or second pitch of an at-bat. That’s absurd. A spot in the Women’s College World Series is on the line and the Florida Gators keep hitting one of Texas Tech’s best players.
