Look, it may not have worked out at all, but Gerry Glasco doesn’t seem to regret the decision he made to try and tie things up with the Tennessee Lady Volunteers in Game 7 of the Women’s College World Series. When Texas Tech desperately needed something good to happen for the Red Raiders to get a run on the board against Tennessee, Glasco gambled.

And he’s standing behind that decision.

What was that decision? In the top of the sixth inning, with the Red Raiders trailing Tennessee by a score of 1-0, Mia Williams was able to hit a double to get on base with just one out. A good situation to be in. And then, Mihyia Davis stepped up to the plate and managed to get some contact of her own in the form of a single to center field.

Instead of being patient and seeing how things unfolded in the inning, Glasco apparently thought the Red Raiders had a chance to tie things up right then and there. He sent Williams. He didn’t stop her at third. She rounded the corner and headed for home.

And she got tagged out because of a brilliantly placed throw from centerfield. But Glasco doesn’t regret how that played out.

“I thought she’d make it," Glasco explained. “The centerfielder charged it really hard and she was running really fast. Usually when you’re running that fast, the odds of making an accurate throw are low, but she made a perfect throw.”

And that kind of makes sense. It makes even more sense that when you look at things from his angle that he thought Williams was just about safe and that she’d had a real chance to score against the Lady Volunteers.

“Unfortunately, that was a great throw. I’d do it again,” Glasco said. “The centerfielder made a great, great throw and the catcher made a great catch. I’ve not seen the replay, I haven’t seen it yet, but I feel like from third it was really close.”

I can get behind that. It didn’t work out, but it was a really close play that almost worked out for Glasco and the Red Raiders. Maybe it would have been better to wait and let things play out down the stretch of that inning? It wasn’t a bad gamble though. It just didn’t work out.
