In a high stakes matchup between the Florida Gators and Texas Tech Red Raiders in Gainesville, things may have seemed a little tense for folks on the outside looking in. In Game 3, while on the road against one of the most prominent brands in college softball and while fresh off a 10-2 loss, Texas Tech had every right to be a little antsy about everything.

Especially with the way the Florida pitchers kept hitting Texas Tech’s Mia Williams whenever she was up to bat against the Gators.

But Gerry Glasco, the head coach for the Texas Tech softball team, took a slightly different approach. Instead of adding pressure to Texas Tech, Glasco simplified things a bit and made sure that his team remembered that they were there to play a game.

“I had it written on the board: have fun,” Glasco explained in a postgame press conference after the Red Raiders eliminated the Gators.

Glasco also wanted to make sure that the Red Raiders were focused in on this game and playing things out in a healthy (and fun) manner.

“You want to let the game play,” Glasco said. “I just keep telling the kids, there’s only one way you can win in the sport of softball and that’s with a ball, a glove, and a bat. That’s the only way you can win.”

And Texas Tech did just that. The Red Raiders managed to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but then the Florida Gators managed to storm back and claimed a 4-3 lead. Then, thanks to a little bit of weather chaos, a lightning delay. And then things were eventful again in the second inning as both teams scored in bursts again and things were tied at 7-7 heading to the third.

“The three F’s for success: have fun is number one, have faith in your teammates, and then win it for your family,” Glasco said of his philosophy. “I think they did a great job. It took them a little bit, I almost lost them a time or two, but keep it fun.”

The Red Raiders definitely did that down the stretch. And there’s no doubt that Texas Tech softball fans had fun with the way things played out. The Red Raiders would go on to score nine more runs. Florida scored zero more. And that’s how Texas Tech was able to walk away with a 16-7 run-rule win over the Gators.

“The only thing going to make this game fun is to win, right,” Glasco said. “Keep it a game, it’s a softball game, it’s a game of ball. Use the ball, the bat, and the glove. And I thought they were phenomenal. Once they bought into that and started having fun, we were hard to hold.”
