Somehow, some way, Texas Tech softball fans keep showing up and making an impact on the head coach of the Red Raiders. It’s refreshing to hear about a coach who doesn’t take this for granted. It may be his second season of leading the Red Raiders, but Gerry Glasco is still impressed by (and grateful for) Texas Tech softball fans and the way they support their team.
While on the road in the Gainesville Super Regional, and having to play the Florida Gators at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium, Texas Tech got to play in front of a pretty hostile environment with opposing fans who weren’t exactly keen on the thought of the Red Raiders being the team to advance.
This was a program that, prior to this series, was 12-2 all time while hosting a Super Regional. And Florida fans had every reason to fully believe that the Gators would be the ones coming out on top, especially after the 10-2 mess that was Game 2.
But, well, Texas Tech showed up on Sunday. And Texas Tech fans were present in Gainesville throughout the series. And for that, Glasco is grateful (and impressed).
Gerry Glasco explains why he can’t stop praising Red Raider fans as Texas Tech softball heads back to the WCWS this season
During his postgame press conference after a lopsided 16-7 Game 3 win for the Red Raiders, Glasco was given the opportunity to talk about his thoughts on how Red Raider fans traveled for this game. Texas Tech’s head coach didn’t waste much time. He praised TTU softball fans quickly.
“I thought it was tremendous, the Texas Tech fans have been tremendous all year and they were tremendous all weekend,” Glasco explained.
Along with that, Glasco took a moment to point out the impact that the home crowd had. He was right in making sure that he gave Florida fans credit for the atmosphere they created in Gainesville, but Glasco also pointed out how Texas Tech fans helped neutralize the home field advantage.
“Florida, I’ll give their fans credit. They had a large crowd, a loud venue, and that made it even more important for our fans to neutralize that,” Glasco continued. “They were phenomenal. Texas Tech fans have been phenomenal everywhere I’ve been.”
That’s a great reputation to have. It’s clearly something that has stuck with Glasco and it’s something that will likely continue to be something that comes up. Especially because it’s not that far of a drive from DFW to get up to Oklahoma City.
“I’ll never forget the World Series last year and I can’t wait to see how many we have at the World Series this year,” Glasco said. “It’s going to be really exciting.”
