If you haven’t been keeping up with how former Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been doing lately, you need to know that his recovery from a season ending knee injury seems to be going pretty well. And that might be a bit of an understatement, to be completely honest.

As Mahomes is working to get back on the field full time as the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, he’s having to overcome the horrifying knee injury that he suffered against the Los Angeles Chargers back in December. During that game, Mahomes was sidelined for the remainder of the season as he tore both his ACL and LCL

One of the greatest quarterbacks in the NFL and a devastating knee injury put an end to his season.

But Mahomes has been focused on getting healthy and getting back to the field. So far, those efforts seem to be working out pretty well. The former Red Raider was in attendance at Kansas City’s OTA on Tuesday and he wasn’t just hanging out.

Mahomes was back on the field. Throwing. Running. Moving around. In a knee brace, sure, but he was mobile and active and that’s a great thing to see. The Kansas City Chiefs seem excited about it and there’s no doubt that their fans are thrilled as well.

Kansas City fans react as Texas Tech legend Patrick Mahomes was spotted at the Chiefs OTAs

Here’s what Kansas City fans had to say as Mahomes was able to run and throw during the Chiefs’ OTA on Tuesday:

They’re absolutely thrilled that Mahomes is up, running, and throwing. I mean, yes, it’s a limited clip. And clearly the guy isn’t fully healthy, but there’s so much to be encouraged by with this sort of development. Kansas City fans are right to be excited.

I’m not a medical expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I’m legitimately shocked that Mahomes is able to do that level of running and throwing given that he tore both the ACL and LCL in his left leg roughly five months ago. From the outside looking in (with absolutely zero expertise on what a knee recovery process looks like here), that’s incredible progress.

Kansas City fans should feel optimistic with this situation.

Clearly it’s not ideal. In an ideal world, LCL and ACL injuries wouldn’t happen. But, this recovery process seems to be going well. Hopefully Mahomes will continue to rest and recover and get back to a point where he can play. And hopefully Mahomes doesn’t rush the process either.
