Well, if you go ahead and ask the folks who vote in the Coaches Poll Top 25, the Texas Tech Red Raiders are apparently deserving of the top rank among the teams from the state of Texas. That’s a pretty special feeling, to be completely honest.
Texas Tech, a college football program with a fanbase that has experienced all sorts of awful emotions while witnessing some truly dreadful seasons, has officially ended the 2025-2026 college football season as the highest ranked team in Texas.
That doesn’t completely and totally erase the sting of that Orange Bowl disaster, but it does help serve as a reminder of just how special this season was.
The 2025-2026 college football season ends with the Texas Tech Red Raiders as the top ranked team from Texas
Here’s how Texas Tech stacks up against the other teams from Texas in the final Coaches Poll Top 25 rankings for the 2025-2026 college football season:
- No. 7 - Texas Tech Red Raiders
- No. 8 - Texas A&M Aggies
- No. 13 - Texas Longhorns
- No. 19 - Houston Cougars
And that’s it. It’s a small group this year. At least for this set of college football rankings. Interestingly enough, both the TCU Horned Frogs and the North Texas Mean Green managed to get ranked in the final AP Poll Top 25 for the seasons that they had.
But not here in the Coaches Poll. With this set of voters, the Mean Green and the Horned Frogs just ended up receiving votes.
As for Texas Tech, the Red Raiders have made some serious strides as a program and they will need to continue to do so if they want to make this more of a regular sort of thing and also if they want to reach higher heights than what they experienced this season.
The way things ended kind of was not great. It truly was rough watching that Orange Bowl against the Oregon Ducks. And it’s clear that this team needs to do better to be able to compete against the best in the country.
