There’s not a higher ranked team in the state of Texas than Joey McGuire’s Texas Tech Red Raiders. At least that’s according to both the Coaches Poll and the AP Poll and then also you know the whole ESPN Football Power Index Rankings

That’s right. All three of those rankings have the Red Raiders above the likes of the Texas Longhorns, Texas A&M Aggies, TCU Horned Frogs, Baylor Bears, and SMU Mustangs. Oh, and a few other teams along the way as well.

There are a number of FBS teams in the state of Texas. 13 to be exact. And this season, the Red Raiders came out on top of all of the other 12 in the Lone Star State. That’s a pretty impressive feat when you consider all of the college football history that the state of Texas has produced over the years.

Texas Tech takes top spot in 2025’s final ESPN FPI rankings among teams from the Lone Star State

Here’s where each and every team from Texas is ranked in the final ESPN FPI rankings for the 2025-2026 college football season:

  • Texas Tech Red Raiders - Big 12 - No. 6 overall
  • Texas Longhorns - SEC - No. 11 overall
  • Texas A&M Aggies - SEC - No. 12 overall
  • SMU Mustangs - ACC - No. 23 overall
  • TCU Horned Frogs - Big 12 - No. 32 overall
  • North Texas Mean Green - American - No. 41 overall
  • Houston Cougars - Big 12 - No. 50 overall
  • Baylor Bears - Big 12 - No. 59 overall
  • UTSA Roadrunners - American - No. 62 overall
  • Texas State Bobcats - Sun Belt - No. 72 overall
  • UTEP Miners - CUSA - No. 125 overall
  • Rice Owls - American - No. 127 overall
  • Sam Houston Bearkats - CUSA - No. 135 overall

It’ll be interesting to see if the Red Raiders can keep rolling like this. It sure seems like Cody Campbell and the very wealthy Texas Tech donor base is more than committed to keeping the Red Raiders among the best teams in the country.

And if that’s the case, then we’ll continue to see Texas Tech in the conversation as being the best team from the state of Texas on an annual basis. Which would be truly great to see if that becomes a very regular occurrence.
