As Gerry Glasco and the Texas Tech softball team head on over to Tallahassee, Florida to meet up with the Florida State Seminoles as part of the next round of the 2025 NCAA softball tournament, the Red Raiders are getting a unique opportunity to get a little bit of revenge.
You see, while Texas Tech and Florida State softball don’t have an extensive rivalry that runs deep and is full of bad blood, there have been a couple of interesting matchups between these two programs in the past.
Interestingly enough, both of the matchups between the Red Raiders and the Seminoles have featured some really close results. The two games between Tech and FSU have been nail biters, decided by one run each, and I would certainly welcome a continuation of that trend over the next few meetings in the 2025 Tallahassee Super Regional.
Texas Tech softball history: Every meeting between the Red Raiders and FSU softball before the 2025 super regional
Here’s literally every time these two teams have met prior to the 2025 Tallahassee Super Regional:
If you want to do a quick bit of math for a second, Texas Tech has scored 10 total runs in the history of this series. And if you want to do some more math, Florida State has also scored 10 total runs in the history of this series.
That's a bit of a fun tie.
The first time these two teams met really was a little bit ago, though it doesn’t feel like it was that long ago. Back in March of 2010 (which is well over a solid 15 years ago, folks), the Texas Tech Red Raiders and the FSU Seminoles met up in Clearwater, Florida.
In a low-scoring affair, Tech was able to snag a 2-1 win over FSU thanks to the dominant, complete game effort from freshman pitcher Ashley Brokeshoulder. Through seven innings pitched, Brokeshoulder only allowed one lone earned run and five hits while striking out four batters.
Brokeshoulder threw a grand total of 83 pitches in this game (which is INCREDIBLY efficient, especially for a freshman) and Tech snagged a solid one-run win over the No. 19 team in the country.
During last season’s matchup between Tech and Florida State, we saw a very different kind of one-run game. The Seminoles snagged a win over a Texas Tech team that finished 29-21 (and ended up finding a new head coach to lead the Red Raiders forward in an ambitious rebuilding project) and this win was in a much higher scoring game.
I should note, the Red Raiders started off strong. Tech jumped out to a 2-0 lead and that lasted up into the third inning, when FSU tied things up. Tech reclaimed the lead in the fourth only to lose it in the bottom half of that inning as the Seminoles scored four runs to claim a 6-3 advantage.
The top of the fifth inning involved Texas Tech scoring FIVE runs (five runs, fifth inning, it’s great), giving the Red Raiders a solid 8-6 lead that they would ultimately and slowly lose in a game that they lost in walk-off fashion.
17 total runs were scored in that 2024 meeting between the Seminoles and Red Raiders, which is a significantly larger number than the three total runs scored between the 2010 editions of those same teams.
And now we get to see how things unfold between Texas Tech and Florida State over the next few days. Someone will break this tie (both in total runs scored and also in the 1-1 historic win count) and it’ll be fun to see who jumps ahead here.
