Going into the final weekend of regular season play, the Texas Tech Red Raiders are sitting in an extra base hit production class all of their own. At least that’s the case when compared to the remainder of the Big 12, that is.Â
There’s just a couple of teams in the country that have managed to put together better slugging percentages than what the Red Raiders have right now. Neither of those teams are conference members of the Big 12.
For those that aren’t familiar, slugging percentage measures the total bases per at bat. So, you take all of those total bases that Texas Tech has accumulated and divide that by every at bat opportunity and then you’ll find that the Red Raiders are really, really good at this.
And that’s the whole lineup. Not just one player. The Red Raiders are consistently good at getting extra base hits on a very regular basis.
Texas Tech softball has the 3rd best slugging percentage in the country and is head and shoulders ahead of the Big 12
- Texas Tech Red Raiders - .740 slugging percentage
- Kansas Jayhawks - .601 slugging percentage
- Arizona Wildcats - .577 slugging percentage
- Arizona State Sun Devils - .569 slugging percentage
- Iowa State Cyclones - .561 slugging percentage
- UCF Knights - .534 slugging percentage
- Oklahoma State Cowgirls - .510 slugging percentage
- Houston Cougars - .496 slugging percentage
- Utah Utes - .495 slugging percentage
- BYU Cougars - .480 slugging percentage
- Baylor Bears - .409 slugging percentage
Nationally? There are just two teams that have managed to put together better slugging percentages than the Red Raiders. The UCLA Bruins have an .837 slugging percentage and the Oklahoma Sooners have an .828 slugging percentage. That’s some pretty elite company for Texas Tech to be in right now.
Looking at this weekend, one of the biggest issues that the Baylor Bears have when being stacked up against the rest of the Big 12 is the fact that they just don’t hit home runs. Just 28 on the season. One of the biggest things working in Texas Tech’s favor is the 113 home runs that they have. Slugging numbers are weighted largely in favor of better extra base hitting abilities.
