Graham Harrell was truly remarkable for the Texas Tech Red Raiders in 2007. Truly remarkable. I mean, it doesn’t get much better than what he was able to accomplish for Texas Tech in 2007. That offense, led by Harrell and all of those passing yards he put up, really elevated what the Red Raiders were able to accomplish that year.
And it’s not like Harrell was doing that all on his own. You can’t really throw the ball to yourself and expect a ton of success. We’ve got to talk about how Michael Crabtree was truly unstoppable as well. And also how Danny Amendola was a dynamic force alongside Crabtree.
As we go through and explore the best offenses that we’ve seen from the Red Raiders since 2000, it’s hard to not fixate on what this group accomplished in 2007.
Texas Tech football history: Mike Leach’s offense was just about unstoppable for the Red Raiders in 2007
Before we get into all of the yards and touchdowns that those three managed to accumulate, let’s talk a little about how they scored an incredible amount of points. We’ll get into the other numbers in a minute. This team managed to score just shy of 41 points per game.
That’ll certainly help you win a few contests here and there and it’s a huge reason as to why the Red Raiders won nine games and made it to the Gator Bowl (which was one of those nine wins, by the way) that season.
Now for the fun part. The yards and touchdowns.
Harrell managed to throw for 5705 yards in 2007. 5705. That’s a lot. Truly. A lot. That’s a lot today. That’s a lot 18 years ago. It’s a lot! With all of those yards, he threw 48 touchdowns (against just 14 interceptions, which is also a lot but not as much when you fully consider how much he was throwing, it’s all relative) and completed just under 72 percent of his passes.
Crabtree, again, unstoppable. We’re talking about how he hauled in 134 passes and managed to rack up 1962 receiving yards and 22 touchdowns. Again, a lot. That’s a lot. Truly. A lot. You just don’t see that happening all that often. And he did that alongside Amendola who had 109 receptions of his own for 1245 yards and six touchdowns.
It can’t be stated in any other way other than by saying that this offense was special in so many ways.
